E. coli in beef recall now found in 5 states

ATLANTA (AP) - E. coli linked to beef recalled in Michigan and Ohio has been found in three other states.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports one confirmed case each in New York, Kentucky and Indiana that is linked to dozens of previously reported cases.

The outbreak has been traced to beef sold in Kroger stores in Michigan and Ohio. The company has recalled more than 5 million pounds of ground beef.

The CDC says it has 44 confirmed cases of the bacterial poisoning. There have been no deaths reported. But 1 of the 21 victims who had to be hospitalized did develop kidney failure.
