Bill Cinton and Barack Obama: Men who'll lunch

Tuesday, September 9th 2008, 12:34 AM

Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton will do lunch Thursday at Bubba's Harlem office, their first extended face-to-face since Obama defeated Hillary Clinton in the primaries.

Bill Clinton offered strong support for Obama's candidacy during the Democratic Party's convention two weeks ago in Denver, but their relationship has been somewhat strained as a result of the bitter primaries.

The former President extended the invitation when he learned Obama would be in New York City to commemorate the 9/11 terrorist attacks, said Matt McKenna, Clinton's spokesman.

Obama and GOP nominee John McCain are planning to make a joint visit to Ground Zero, perhaps in the afternoon because of logistical and security reasons.

"We'll try to find some ways to let them express to the country their feelings without taking away from the day," Mayor Bloomberg said. "And remember, the day is not just the morning."

That night, Obama and McCain will discuss their views on service and civic engagement during a forum at Columbia University.
