Lift inspector canned in overtime flap

An elevator worker's job has its ups and downs, but he can't be in two places at once.

City elevator inspector Edward Holihan was fired Thursday after he was caught fudging records to show he was working for both the Buildings Department and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority at the same time.

Holihan's arrest triggered a reinspection of "every elevator recently assigned to this inspector," Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri said. No problems were found in 100 reinspected elevators, a spokesman said.

City leaders have demanded greater elevator safety after the death of a 5-year-old boy in Brooklyn, and a Daily News investigation that found widespread maintenance problems in Housing Authority elevators.

Holihan, 48, of the Bronx, worked for the MTA for 27 years as a night-shift elevator maintenance supervisor. For the last four years, he also worked as a daytime Buildings Department elevator inspector.

City investigators found he had submitted timesheets claiming he worked overtime for the MTA and his Buildings Department job, when he had actually worked only for the MTA.

In a plea bargain, Holihan pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. He resigned from his Buildings Department job and was fined $3,524, the amount of illegal overtime he was paid.
