BABY-BOTTLE CHEMICAL WAR

WASHINGTON - Federal regulators say more research is needed on a controversial chemical found in many plastic products, including baby bottles - indicating that they have no immediate plan to curb bisphenol A.
A Food and Drug Administration letter released yesterday says the agency is planning "a large research effort" - with studies lasting years - to assess the effects of so-called BPA on monkeys and other lab animals.
Consumer advocates ripped the FDA for not immediately curbing the use of bisphenol A, a chemical used for decades to harden plastic products.
