US Discriminatory Immigration Policies Toward Haitians
Haitians began arriving in South Florida about 50 years ago, but were denied the same rights and treatment as more favored immigrants like Europeans. Fleeing repressive dictatorships hardly mattered during years under "Papa" and "Baby Doc" Duvalier or when military dictatorships ran the country. In September 1963, the first boatload claiming persecution arrived but were denied asylum and deported. Decades later, it's the same.
