Remember the Erin Brockovich movie? You may want to pull out the DVD again or check the video above because the same industrial pollutant HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM has been found in tap water in 31 of 35 U.S. cities. WTF! An environmental group has found the probable carcinogen featured in the film in the tap water of 31 of 35 US cities it analyzed. The top 5 on the list of offenders were Norman, Okla., Honolulu, Riverside, Calif., and Madison, Wis. “Our municipal water supplies are in danger all over the US,” says Brockovich. “This is a chemical that should be regulated.” Other cities include Chicago, San Antonio, Atlanta, New York, DC, Miami and moreRead more at www.mediaquicky.comERIN Brockovich famously took on utility Pacific Gas & Electric over contamination of drinking water in Hinkley, Calif., it was made into a movie and actress Julia Roberts won an Oscar in 2001. Thanks to Brockovich’s efforts, in the 1990s PG&E settled a multimillion-dollar lawsuit with hundreds of residents and pledged to clean up the contamination.
But it appears the plume of contaminated groundwater is spreading. The EPA is considering setting limits for hexavalent chromium, reports after the National Institutes of Health labeled it a “probable carcinogen” in 2008. California took steps last year to become the first state to regulate hexavalent chromium in drinking water, but chemical industry advocates say the proposed standard of 0.06 parts per billion is too strict, noting that the substance can occur naturally at higher levels. The full report by the Environmental Working Group is available to view.
