Georgia: Bernice King Leaves Helm of Rights Group By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
For more than a year, the Rev. Bernice King put off taking her oath as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, co-founded by her father, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On Friday, she said she did not want the job at all. Her decision comes after the rights group split into two factions, had its finances scrutinized and saw its former chairman indicted last week on theft charges. The group has fallen so far that Andrew Young, a former executive director of the leadership conference, said he told Ms. King that she had better things to do with her time.
