African-American student stabbed in Russian city

MOSCOW (AP) — Police say an 18-year-old African-American exchange student has been stabbed in the Russian city of Volgograd in what could be a racially motivated attack.

City police spokeswoman Svetlana Smolyaninova says Stanley Robinson of Providence, Rhode Island, was stabbed twice in the southern Russian city on Dec. 5. The head doctor of Volgograd's Hospital No. 12, Pyotr Ivanov, described his condition Friday as grave but stable.

Robinson's mother, Tina Robinson, said in a telephone interview Friday that her son has developed pneumonia.

Smolyaninova said no one has been detained in connection with the attack. One possible motive is racial intolerance, she said.

At least 85 people have been killed and 368 injured in suspected hate crimes in Russia this year, rights groups say.
