New York (Tadias) - Here are but a few of the African-flavored summer festivals in New York.

AUG. 16TH, UNIVERSAL HIP-HOP PARADE, BROOKLYN, NY


All roads lead to Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon, August 16th for the annual Universal Hip-Hop Parade held in honor of Marcus Garvey’s birthday. This year’s theme is “The Message, The Movement, The Progress! Hip-Hop for Social Change”. Learn more at: universalhiphopparade.com for more details.

AUG. 17TH, THE BLACK STAR BOAT RIDE, NEW YORK, NY
From the promoters of Rooftop to Forward Reggae Fridays and others in between - Bintou with Stakamusic and Stateside Revolution, has brought nothing short of fun and flare back to the dance. This year Conscious Music will host the 1st Annual Black Star Liner Boat Ride on board the Paddlewheel Queen (at 23rd and FDR), and will be serving a great complimentary selection of quality Caribbean and African cuisines. The artist roster includes Jamaica Stateside Revolutions and Sirius Radio host DJ Gringo. And DJ Sirak from Ethiopia blends African Vibes from Fela Kuti to conscious hip-hop and on the rooftop Live African Drumming. AUG. 20TH, THE ETHIOPIQUES REUNION, NEW YORK, NY

Come and enjoy a historical night of the grooves of Ethiopia. The vibes of Extra Golden include performances by Mahmoud Ahmed and Alemayehu Eshete with The Either/Orchestra, and Gétatchèw Mèkurya with The Ex at Lincoln Center Out of Doors free concert. Time: 6pm. Location: Damrosch Park Bandshell. This event is hosted by the Lincoln Center in cooperation with WFMU and Ethiopiques/EthioSonic.

AUG. 24TH, THE AFRICAN DAY PARADE, HARLEM, NY

The African Day Parade Inc. is proud to announce The 2nd Annual African Day Parade (ADP) which will be held on Sunday August 24, 2008 in Harlem, NYC. The theme for this year is Family & Tradition. This event is signed to celebrate and unify the Beauty and Richness of Black & African Culture. Parade route begins at 126th Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard ( 7 Ave) to 116th street and 8th Avenue. AUG. 31ST, BLACK AUGUST, NEW YORK, NY

This year’s Black August event goes down August 11 at Nokia Theater in NYC. Performances by Immortal Technique, EPMD, Black Moon and others. The Black August Hip Hop Project strives to promote human rights though supporting and influencing the global development of Hip Hop culture. By facilitating exchanges between international communities where Hip Hop is a vital part of youth culture, we promote awareness about the social and political issues that affect our global communities. Internationally, Black August has facilitated 8 international delegations of artists and activists to Cuba (1998, 1999, 2000, and 2003), South Africa (2001), Tanzania (2005), Brazil (2004, 2006 and last year to Venezuela (2007).
