NY1's Dean Meminger filed the following report on a spot on Bronxdale Avenue where many go for its so-called "healing power," as the station continues on its quest for some of the best keep secrets in the borough.
Believers say it's the miracle water of the Bronx and they line up every day to get some.
They drink it and rub it where they have aches and pains thinking it'll wash those ailments away.
"I have pain on this and this," said one Bronx resident. "I put the water, it is good. Put the water, it feels better."
The grotto with the statue of the Virgin Mary has been at St. Lucy's Catholic Church on Bronxdale Avenue since 1939. It's a replica of the Our Lady of Lourdes in France, where many Christians believe miracles have happened.
These Bronx residents say miracles are happening at this site with prayer and water from the grotto. They say it not only heals them, but keeps them safe from evil.
"It is blessed water," said another local resident. "A lot of people come to get it, drink it, bathe in it, and wash out your house and car with it."
"Just the faith, the sense of miracle work that the grotto brings to the Bronx," said a third Bronx resident as to why he comes to the location.
Originally the water came from a natural spring, but after time that spring dried up. Now the water comes from the city. It's tap water, but believers say that does not matter.
The pastor of St. Lucy's says the water is not blessed or holy water, but it can be.
"The people do often bring the water from the grottos because it is drinkable water, and they ask us to bless it on a pretty regular basis as they bring it home," said Reverend Robert Norris, pastor of St. Lucy's Church.
Before heading home, some also stop by the replica of the Stations of the Cross at St. Lucy's. They retrace the steps Jesus took leading up to his crucifixion. For some, it's an emotional experience and a time to reflect on their religion.
"They find a great deal of peace and strength here," said Norris. "For me that is a wonderful thing. That is a blessing."
