With its release to bookstores across the country now underway, The Bandana Republic (Soft Skull Press), is already a hot subject on Internet Radio. Edited by Louis Reyes Rivera and Bruce George, this collection includes essays, poems, letters, short stories, interviews, et al, by folks who, at some point in their lives, have been associated with urban gangs. With a foreward by Jim Brown and an introduction by Rivera, this powerful and provocative literary work is certain to break new ground for much needed dialogue.

3. The Patriot Ax (?)

An NWU Panel Discussion

Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 7pm

International Solidarity Center

55 West 17 St. (near 6th Ave.), Manhattan

Donation: $15 for non-members, $7 for NWU members

Ever since the passage of the Patriot Act, much has changed regarding freedom of information and freedom of the press. How has this impacted upon media reportage? Have new restrictions on media spilled over into discussions on the economy, national employment, and other issues affecting our lives? Is the Patriot Act an ax wielded upon our Constitutional Rights? What happens to journalists and creative writers who attempt to defy the restrictions placed on them by this decree?

On June 12, 2008, Catherine Crump, a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union and a recognized expert on First Amendment rights, will join award-winning playwright activists and National Writers Union members Laurence Holder and Yusef Salaam in a frank discussion on the effects of the Patriot Act and the neo-censorship that it has ushered into our daily lives. Whether you’re a journalist or a creative writer, the issues these panelists will examine affects you too. A discussion not to be missed!
