STATE GIVING PERV DOC PLENTY OF 'LICENSE'
By MELISSA KLEIN
June 15, 2008 -- The state is allowing a Brooklyn sex offender - who left his wedding ring inside his sleeping victim during an appalling attack - to apply to get his medical license, The Post has learned.
A state appeals board ruled Dr. Jason Jaramillo, an internal-medicine resident at Long Island College Hospital, should be allowed to apply for the license, even after he was convicted of sexually abusing his wife's friend.
"The facts in this case fail to merit placing a permanent ban on [Jaramillo] from ever receiving a medical license," the decision said.
Jaramillo pleaded guilty to attacking the victim while she slept at his home three years ago, cutting off her clothes and underwear, prosecutors said.
He was sentenced to ten years probation and had to register as a Level-1 sex offender - the lowest risk category.
The board made the decision last month, despite the state Health Department saying that "it is inappropriate for a Level 1 sex offender to have first-line contact with patients."
Jaramillo, who insisted to The Post that the "sexual encounter" was consensual, initially received only censure and reprimand by the medical misconduct board, but the Health Department appealed.
On Friday, Long Island College Hospital said Jaramillo's contract as a resident would not be renewed at the end of June.
